Summary:PURPOSE:To automate the lid closing work for a long-sized carton for packing, and save the labor by a method wherein a carton is held by a holding means after one of the lids is closed by a first lid closing means, and the other lid is closed by a second lid closing means. CONSTITUTION:When a carton 2 is carried, and a sensor 3 detects the front end of the carton 2, a conveyor 1 stops, and a movable block 5 advances and fixes the carton 2 together with a fixed block 4. Then, a blade 10 is turned by a cylinder 8, and an inner lid 2b is closed, and the inner lid 2b is held by making holders 11, 12 advance. Then, the blade 10 is returned, and a blade 9 is turned, and an outer lid 2c is closed in such a manner that the outer lid 2c covers the inner lid 2b. Then, the carton 2 is bundled by a PP band tying machine 18 which is provided between sensors 3 and 7, and the blade 9, holders 11 and 12, and the movable block 5 are retreated, and the length of the carton 2 is detected by a rotary encoder 16 by carrying the carton 2. When the rotary encoder 16 detects that the carton 2 is carried to a second tying location, the conveyor 1 is stopped.
