Summary:PURPOSE:To simplify the structure and to reduce the cost by providing devices for detecting a starting point mark and a tail end mark of an ink ribbon, and by starting rewinding of the ink ribbon on detection of the tail end mark while stopping the rewinding on detection of the starting point mark. CONSTITUTION:A first paper sensor 55, an ink ribon sensor 70 and a second paper sensor 65 are provided in a route forming an ink ribbon passage between an unwind shaft 51 and a windup shaft 53. A starting point mark and a tail end mark are provided to both ends of an ink ribbon 50, and the marks are detected by difference of reflectances between the marks and the ink ribbon 50. The ink ribbon 50 is wound up by operation of the windup shaft 53, and rewinding is started when the tail end marks is detected by the ink ribbon sensor 70, then the ink ribbon 50 is rewound round the unwind shaft 51 under control by a stepping motor. During continuation of the rewinding, the starting point mark is detected by the ink ribbon sensor, and the rewinding is stopped. Then, the ink ribbon 50 is wound up to a position available for printing with specified steps given to the stepping motor.
