PURPOSE:To provide an image feature amount extracting device capable of calculating moment even of an object with a multi-valued image in addition to that of an object expressed by a binary image and shortening the processing time of the calculation. CONSTITUTION:The image feature amount extracting device is provided with the 1st storing means 101 for extracting feature amount and storing inputted density image data, an image density converting means 102 for converting image density so that a background is separated from an object, a horizontal projection computing means 103 for computing the sum of image density in all the picture elements of each row based upon image data converted by the means 102, a vertical projection computing means 104 for computing the sum of image density in all the picture elements of each column, an auxiliary arithmetic means 105 for computing the sum of products between the image density of respective picture elements included in each row (column) and column (row) numbers corresponding to each picture element, the 2nd storing means 106 for storing the computed results of the means 103 to 105, and a moment computing means 108 for computing moment for extracting the feature amount of the image based upon the stored computed results.
