PURPOSE:To provide the picture reader not incurring deterioration in picture quality even for an original with a glaze. CONSTITUTION:The picture reader is provided with a glass base 3a on which a read original is placed, a platen roller 4 pressing a read original arranged opposite to the surface of the glass base 3a to the original platen, an optical sensor 3d arranged to a rear side of the glass base 3a and a carrying means carrying sequentially a read original to a read position of the optical sensor 3d. A spacer 3e floating the read original by a prescribed quantity with respect to the glass base 3a is provided on the glass base 3a in the vicinity of the platen roller 4 to prevent the reduction in a diffused reflection light due to the close contact between the original and the glass base 3a thereby preventing deterioration in the picture quality.
