Summary:PURPOSE:To provide a thermal transfer printer capable of using plain paper and thermal paper, requiring no long printing time and preventing the damage of a thermal head. CONSTITUTION:Either one of plain paper 12 and thermal paper is fed to the gap between a platen roller 37 and a thermal head 28 by a feed means. In the case of the plain paper 12, an ink sheet 21 is superposed on the plain paper 12 to be heated by the thermal head 28 and the ink of the ink sheet 21 is melted. In the case of the thermal paper, the thermal paper is directly heated by the thermal head 28 to develop a color. When there is no thermal paper between the platen roller 37 and the thermal head 28, the platen roller 37 and the thermal head 28 are brought to a direct contact state but, since the surface of the platen roller 37 is coated with fluoroplastic, the platen roller 37 is smoothly rotated.
