Summary:PURPOSE:To heat a coil quickly and uniformly by entering the coil provided with a gap between wound layers into a soaking pit and making hot gas flow freely in the gap between the wound layers. CONSTITUTION:The coil 4 made up of a rough rolled metal plate 2 is inserted into the soaking pit and heated. Projections 8 are given to this metal plate 2 to form the gap S between the wound layers when this metal is wound up round the coil 4. Then, the coil 4 is inserted into the soaking pit and hot gas G is penetrated into the gap S between the wound layers of the coil 4 and heats the coil 4. Recessed parts to form projections 8 on the surface of the metal plate 2 are equipped as constitution suitably on the peripheral surface of either the upper or the lower work roll. As a result, the coil can be heated quickly, entirely and uniformly and when the metal plate is rough-rolled by work rolls into a coil, the projections 8 can be interposed as spacers between the wound layers and the gaps can be formed easily between the wound layers.
