Summary:PURPOSE:To automatically set an input signal level so as to always obtain an optimum modulation factor for a laser light of an optical transmitter. CONSTITUTION:An optical modulator has an input terminal 1 for inputting an electric signal, level altering means 2, 14 for altering the level of the input signal, and laser light modulating means 4 for converting the level-altered electric signal into an optical signal, and comprises level detecting means 5, 8, 9, 10 for detecting the output signal level of the modulated laser light, memory means 11 for storing the output signal level detected by the means 5, 8, 9, 10, calculating and deciding means 11, 12 for calculating the variation amount of the output signal level and deciding the level of the electric signal for optimally modulating the laser light from the calculated result, and input signal control means 13 for controlling the means 2, 14 based on the decided result of the means 11, 12.
