Summary:PURPOSE:To provide the liquid crystal display element which is improved in the visual field angle and brightness in a lateral visual angle direction by optimum disposition with polarizing plates by taking the optical anisotropy of plastic films into consideration. CONSTITUTION:Uniaxially stretched polyethylene terephthalate (1-PET) having about 100mum thickness is used for the plastic film substrates 1 disposed to face each other. Electrodes 2 and orientation control films 3 are deposited and formed on the inside surface of the plastic film substrate 1 and the peripheral edge parts thereof are sealed with a sealant 4. A liquid crystal 5 is sealed therein. The liquid crystal 5 is a chiral nematic liquid crystal and the thickness of the liquid crystal layer is 8.25mum. The twist angle thereof is specified to 200 deg.. The polarizing plates 6 are respectively stuck to the outside surfaces of the upper and lower substrates 1. The relations between the stretching direction (TD) of the substrates 1 and the rubbing direction of the orientation control film deposited on the substrates 1 are respectively set at about 45 deg. with both the upper and lower substrates 1.
