Summary:PURPOSE:To improve the recognition speed by separating dots of a dictionary into apexes and inner points and retrieving the correspondence with respect to sets of the apexes. CONSTITUTION:In the dictionary mode of dot patterns, each dot is classified into apexes and inner points of a most circumscribed convex polygon and the result is stored in the dictionary memory 35. In the recognition mode of an unknown dot pattern, an unknown pattern coincident with the apex of a graphic of the dictionary registered as a dictionary is retrieved, objects are focused and its apex interval matrix is obtained, a pattern having the highest degree of coincidence is decided as a candidate pattern from the result of comparison between the matrix and that in the dictionary pattern. Further, the parallel moving quantity and the rotation angle of the dictionary pattern to the candidate pattern are obtained, the inner points of the dictionary pattern are rotated and moved by using the values above to obtain a corresponding dot of he candidate pattern, and the recognition is applied depending on the degree of matching between the dot and each dot of the dictionary pattern.
