PURPOSE:To provide the subject novel compound having excellent herbicidal activity and safety as a herbicide for paddy rice and dry field crop. CONSTITUTION:The objective compound of formula I (X and Y are each H, halogen, lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, trifluoromethyl, phenoxy, etc.; R is lower alkenyloxy, propargyloxy, isopropylideneaminoxy, etc.; (n) is 1 or 2), for example, allyl-4-(3-chlorophenyl)-4-cyano-3-phenylbutanoate. This compound can be obtained by Michael addition reaction between a substituted benzyl cyanide of formula II and a substituted cinnamic acid derivative of formula III in the presence of a base (e.g. NaOH) in a solvent (e.g. THF). This compound is useful for controlling paddy weeds such as Poni Crus-galli L. Scirpus juncoides, Alisma canaliculatum, Monochoria vaginalis, or Lindernia Pyxiderea L, and field weeds such as those of Setaria viridis, Polygonum Blumei, Meisn., etc.
