Summary:PURPOSE:To accomplish the title bleaching using oxygen by adding a nonionic surfactant and specific compound to the system to obtain pulp of low kappa-value through a medium-concentration oxygen bleaching technique while mitigating effluent load. CONSTITUTION:In carrying out bleaching cellulose pulp using oxygen, a mixture of (A) a nonionic surfactant (e.g. polyoxyethylene alkyl ether) and (B) an ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid(EDTA) derivative is added to the pulp. For the addition, it is preferable that said mixture be added in the form of an aqueous dispersion to the pulp slurry. The amount of said mixture to be added is, on an active ingredient basis, pref. 50-400ppm based on the pulp, and the weight ratio for the components A and B is pref. (1:9)-(9:1).
