Summary:PURPOSE:To easily obtain high-purity m-t-butylphenol useful as a raw material for resin or intermediate for agricultural chemicals, etc., on an industrial scale at a low cost. CONSTITUTION:A mixture of m-t-butylphenol(MTBP) and p-t-butylphenol(PTBP) is subjected to dealkylation reaction using active clay as a catalyst. The reaction is carried out in the presence of 0.5-10wt.%, preferably 0.5-5wt.% (based on the active clay) of an alkali metal or alkaline-earth metal carbonate, bicarbonate, oxide or hydroxide to prevent the decomposition and the trans-alkylation of the meta-isomer and to effect the selective dealkylation of the para-isomer which is difficult to be separated from the meta-isomer. The objective MTBP having high purity can be produced on an industrial scale at a low cost by this process. When a mixture of MTBP and PTBP obtained by the alkylation reaction of phenol and an isobutylene source in the presence of active clay and phosphoric acid as catalysts is used as the raw material for the above reaction, high-purity MTBP can be produced from phenol and isobutylene source in a series of continuous procedures and, accordingly, the process becomes more advantageous from the industrial point of view.
