Summary:PURPOSE:To improve the initial performance of NOx cleaning performance in an oxygen excess region and durability performance by preparing the calcined matter formed by mixing at least one kind selected from copper and cobalt and a zeolite in ammonia and calcining the mixture at >=150 deg.C after drying into a slurry and coating the surface of a refractory carrier with this slurry. CONSTITUTION:At least one kind selected from copper and cobalt and the zeolite are mixed in the ammonia and dried. The mixture is calcined at >=150 deg.C and the calcined matter thereof is made into the slurry. The refractory carrier is coated with this slurry. The elution of the copper or cobalt which is the active component at the time of prepn. of the wash coat slurry from the inside of the zeolite into the water and the decrease in the active component are prevented in this way. The rate of removing NOx in the oxygen excess atmosphere is improved.
