PURPOSE:To obtain the character recognizing device which suppress a decrease in recognition precision or recognition speed due to touching characters and obtains a highly precise recognition result in a short time as to a character recognizing device which recognizes characters in a document image. CONSTITUTION:This device consists of a scanner 17 which reads the object document to be recognized, a CPU 18, a ROM 22 consisting of a control program 19, a recognition dictionary 20 which contains graphic features of object characters to be recognized, and a word dictionary 21, a RAM 28 consisting of a document image 23, a touching character image 24 in the document image, a character recognition result 25, a touching candidate character string 26 as a recognition candidate for the touching character image, and a touching character dictionary 27, a keyboard 29, and a display device 30; and a character string which is possibly the recognition result of the touching character image is found by retrieving the word dictionary 21 by using a character other than touching characters as a key, and consequently character images whose recognition results are already obtained are combined to generate an artificial touching character image. Then an image decided as touching characters is compared with the generated artificial touching character image to recognize the touching characters.
