Summary:PURPOSE:To provide a new compound useful as a herbicide capable of controlling weeds in the fields including paddy fields at extremely low doses. CONSTITUTION:The compound of formula I (R is furyl, thionyl or imidazolyl; R is OH, lower alkoxy, alkylthio, etc.; R and R are each halogen, alkoxy, alkyl, etc.; Z is methyne or N; Y is O or S), e.g. ethyl 2-(4,6- dimethoxypyrimidine-2-yl)oxy-2-(3-bromothiophen-2-yl)thioacetate. The compound of the formula I can be obtained by reaction of a compound of formula II (B is halogen) with a compound of formula III in the presence of a base (e.g. NaOH) in a solvent (e.g. dichloromethane) at -10 to 200 deg.C. This compound is useful for controlling broadleaf weeds such as Amaranthus viridis and Polygonum lapathifolium, both perennial and annual Cyperaceae weeds such as Cyperus microiria and Cyperus rotundus, and paddy weeds such as Cyperus difformis and Scirpus juncoides.
