Summary:PURPOSE:To obtain a catalyst with high activity which can desulfurize a hardly reactive sulfur compd. by incorporating an erbium compd. to a hydrogenation desulfurization catalyst. CONSTITUTION:This catalyst is a hydrogenation desulfurization catalyst for a hydrocarbon wherein at least one or two or more metals selected from metals of VIB, VIII and VA groups in the periodic table, or oxides, sulfides and salts thereof and an erbium compd. are carried on a fire-resistant carrier. Therefore, this hydrogenation desulfurization catalyst exhibits a remarkably higher desulfurization activity, a remarkably extended catalytic life, less decrease in hue and excellent long-term stability in comparison with the conventional hydrogenation desulfurization catalyst.
