Summary:PURPOSE:To obtain a purple pigment useful as a coloring agent derived from a natural product having high safety, further expectable also as a biologically active substance and derived from a microorganism of the genus Penicillium. CONSTITUTION:The objective new purple pigment having the following properties: Appearance, blue black powder; molecular formula, C23H25NO6; elementary analysis (found values), C 61.94%, H 5.06%, N 3.95%; solubility, soluble in water, methanol, etc., insoluble in n-hexane, etc.; color reaction, positive to 2,4- dinitrophenylhydrazine and negative to Fe (III) chloride and ninhydrin. The pigment is obtained from a cultured mixture obtained by culturing a new violet pigment producing bacterium [e.g. Penicillium sp.-TA85S-28-H2 strain] belonging to the genus Penicillium. The production of the pigment is preferably carried out using citric acid buffer under submerged culture at 30 deg.C and pH5.
