PURPOSE:To quickly perform the processing by specifying a KANJI (Chinese character), whose reading is indistinct, with the number of strokes and starting retrieval for reading from a corresponding address of a phonetical reading/ Japanese pronunciation reading dictionary table on a basis of special information for reverse retrieval of this KANJI and an index table. CONSTITUTION:When an operator inputs the number of strokes of the KANJI, whose reading the operator does not know, from a keyboard 1, a retrieval control part 6 retrieves stroke number information column (u) of a reverse retrieval special information table 5 and successively display contents on a display device through a memory 7. If the operator selects the objective KANJI on the keyboard 1, a block of an index table 4 corresponding to numerical value '9' is selected on a basis of special information for reverse retrieval of the KANJI in the reverse retrieval special information table 5, and the control is jumped to an reading address of a phonetical reading/Japanese pronunciation reading dictionary table 3 in accordance with the address of the first character stored in this block, and retrieval is started from this and dress; and when the objective KANJI is found, its reading is outputted to the memory 7 and displayed with KANA (Japanese syllabary) characters on the display device.
