PURPOSE:To obtain an automatic detection device which can automatically detect a characteristic mount on the surface of a work such as surface defect and surface roughness without giving trouble to a person by creating a mask image which matches the shape of an inspection part without being affected by scattering of dimensions due to positioning accuracy or machining tolerance of the work. CONSTITUTION:An inspection part image is created by performing digitization processing of an image which is input by an ITV camera 4 and a cross point between a boundary line and an inspection part image contour is extracted by adding it to the boundary line image for creating mask. A mask point is created from the position relationship and work reference dimensions from the cross points and a mask image interlocking the mask points is created. By performing masking of the image which was subjected to digitization processing using the mask image, a characteristic amount on the surface of the work such as surface defect and surface roughness can be detected.
