Summary:PURPOSE: To attach a surgical fastener by providing a driving means for driving the fastener into an organ after both jaw members are mutually positioned by an advancing means, constructing the driving means and the advancing means independently of each other and properly aligning both jaws. CONSTITUTION: A link structure 42 causes a jaw mechanism to perform two- stage approaching. Thus, first large approaching is caused by the first movement of a slider mechanism 40 and, on the other hand, by smaller second approaching, approaching occurs for both jaws at the end of the movement of the slider mechanism 40. Therefore, when the slider mechanism 40 is first moved by the operation of a push button 26, the jaw mechanism is fine-tuned to be suited for various thicknesses of organs disposed between cartridge jaw members 22 toward an anvil jaw member 20. A coupling mechanism for connecting a fastener driving mechanism to a trigger mechanism only when a proper distance is obtained between the jaw members 20 and 22 is disposed.
