PURPOSE:To efficiently implement the heat treatment of a metal strip under the reducing atmosphere by realizing quenching of the heated metal strip by the mist cooling method where the oxygen free gas is made to be the atomizing medium. CONSTITUTION:A metal strip A is continuously carried to a heating zone 12 which is provided with chambers 21, 22 having a plurality of nozzles and provided with a plurality of direct fire burners 31 as a heating source, and the metal strip A is heated to the specified temperature by maintaining the reducing atmosphere with the combustion exhaust gas from the direct fire burners 31. Then, this metal strip A is carried to a cooling zone 13 which is provided with chambers 23,24 having a plurality of atomizer mechanisms, and at the same time, the reducing combustible exhaust gas of the heating zone 12 is cooled by a cooler 51 and compressed by a compressor 52 and fed to the cooling zone 13 together with the cooling water, and the metal strip A is quenched to the specified temperature under the reducing atmosphere. This procedure allows the carrying speed of the metal strip A to be increased and the heat treatment efficiency to be improved.
