CONSTITUTION:In a recording and reproducing device which records and reproduce plural data groups consisting of an optional data volume in a memory card 6 consisting of plural batch erasing type semiconductor memories of the same volume, index data corresponding to each data group is recorded with the data group in the memory card 6. An effective flag indicating whether index data is effective or ineffective is included in the piece of index data and at the time of erasing the data group, the effective flag of the corresponding piece of index data is rewritten from 'effective' to 'ineffective'.
