Summary:PURPOSE:To prevent the sticking of fine glass particles to the tip of a multiply- tubed burner and to effectively produce a porous glass preform as an intermediate for producing a preform for an optical fiber. CONSTITUTION:When gaseous starting material for glass is jetted from a multiply-tubed burner, oxidized and hydrolyzed in an oxyhydrogen flame and the resulting fine glass particles are deposited on the tip or periphery of a rotating starting member to produce a preform for an optical fiber, inert gas flowing through a nozzle between a nozzle for jetting a gaseous mixture of the gaseous starting material for glass fed into the burner with gaseous oxygen and a nozzle for jetting gaseous hydrogen is heated to >=150 deg.C.
