Summary:PURPOSE:To improve the character recognizing rate and to shorten the character processing time by segmenting exactly the touched character strings. CONSTITUTION:A string of concatenated black picture elements is obtained from a binary image inputted at an image input part 1 and also recognized at a character recognized part 3. Thus it is decided whether those black picture elements are equal. to a single character or a touched character string. If a single character is decided, the horizontal distribution of picture elements is defined as a segmentation pattern 4. Then the pattern 4 is applied to the touched character string so that the characters are segmented at a character segmenting part 5. Thus the segmentation pattern obtained on the basis of the untouched characters is applied for segmentation of the touched character string. As a result, the character segmenting mistakes are decreased, the character recognizing rate is improved, and the character recognizing time is shortened.
