Summary:PURPOSE:To maintain a stabilized function over a long period of time in a friction transmission device provided with a friction element made of organic friction material and a friction element made of metal (or made of nonmetal) by making the surface roughness of the friction element made of metal larger than that of the friction element made of organic friction material. CONSTITUTION:In an electromagnetic friction brake used in a vacuum, a disc 3 on the side of being damped made of organic friction material (for example, polyimide resin material, phenol resin material, etc.) is fitted with a rotary shaft 1 on the side of being damped through a hub 2 by means of spline engagement. A pair of discs 7, 9 made of metal on the side of damping are provided on the side of damping so that they face each other with the disc 3 on the side of being damped between them, and the disc 9 is fixed on a base 13 with an adjusting bolt 11, and, at the same time, the disc 7 is energized in the direction toward the disc 3 on the side of being damped by a spring 15. On this occasion, surface roughness of discs 7, 9 is so formed that it becomes larger than that of the disc 3, and, at the same time, surface roughness of discs 7, 9 is so formed that its maximum height becomes not less than 5mum.
