Summary:PURPOSE:To provide the subject medical drug composition containing a selenium compound, a thiol compound or a mixture of a selenium compound and a thiol compound as the active component, capable of improving and keeping vigilance and useful as a stimulant for treatment of periodic somnolence, etc. CONSTITUTION:A selenium compound such as selenium tetrachloride or sodium selenite, a thiol compound such as dithiothreitol, glutathione or 2- mercaptoethanol or a mixture of a selenium compound and a thiol compound is blended with a carrier, a diluent and/or a vehicle respectively pharmaceutically permissible and, in addition thereto, vitamins such as vitamin E for preventing side effects, thus giving the objective medical composition for improving and keeping vigilance, capable of inhibiting abnormal or unnecessary sleep and sleepiness and useful, e.g. as a drug for giving an excellent vigilance, a general drug for preventing sleepiness and an experimental assistant agent for keeping an experimental animal to a constant vigilance.
