Summary:PURPOSE:To clearly distinguish a sonar image from a radar image by a method wherein a detecting signal is output only when the radar image data is read, and image data read out from memories in response to a dot clock of a gate circuit are alternately output to a display device. CONSTITUTION:A data presence detecting part 14 detects the presence/absence of the radar image data read from a radar image memory 4, and outputs a detecting signal only when the radar image data is present. A gate circuit 16 permits a dot clock from a dot clock generator 6 to pass therethrough in response to the detecting signal. Moreover, a switching circuit 20 alternately outputs image data read from image memories 2, 4 to a display device 18 in response to the dot clock, while outputting with priority a sonar image data read from the sonar image memory 2 to the display device 18 when the dot clock is stopped. This image display apparatus is provided with these detecting part 14, gate circuit 16 and switching circuit 20. Therefore, a sonar image can be clearly distinguished from a radar image.
