Summary:PURPOSE:To provide a remarkable antitumor agent having high activity and low toxicity by compounding as an active ingredient an extract from the ink sack or ink of the Cephalopoda such as cuttlefish or octopus having been scarcely utilized. CONSTITUTION:An antitumor agent contains as a main ingredient a heterosaccharide fraction containing proteoglycan as a main ingredient, the heterosaccharide fraction being prepared by extracting dry cuttlefish ink with water, buffer solution or a high salt solution containing guanine hydrochloride salt, urea, etc., or further subjecting the extract to an ion exchange gel column chromatography, molecular sieve treatment, etc., the dry cuttlefish ink being prepared by collecting ink sacks and ink from raw cuttlefish, octopus, etc., and subsequently dehydrating and drying the collected ink sacks and ink with an organic solvent such as acetone or ethanol. The antitumor agent is highly active, low toxic and effective for the treatment of cancers.
