Summary:PURPOSE:To dispose a UV ray irradiation style ozone generator at the upper flow and a catalyst comprising the oxide of Cu, Mn, Co, Ni, Fe, Ti, Fe, Ti or Ag at the rear flow, when ethylene generated during the storage of vegetables and fruits is decomposed and removed. CONSTITUTION:A UV ray irradiation style ozone generator and a catalyst comprising the oxide (e.g. MnO2-TiO2, MnO2-Ag2O-TiO2) of Cu, Mn, Ti, Ag, etc., are disposed at the upper position of a gas flow and at the rear position, respectively, and ethylene generated during the storage of asparagus and spinaches are decomposed and removed in the presence of ozone at 10-20 deg.C at a humidity of 80-100%. An OH type low pressure mercury lamp is disposed as the ozone generator and generates ozone rays and germicidal rays to form a reactive field in which the ozone and nascent oxygen produced by the decomposition of the ozone exist together and ethylene is also activated. The method permits to efficiently remove the ethylene and substantially not to leave the ozone injurious against the respiratory systems, etc., of humans.
