Summary:PURPOSE:To seal a circumferential gap between a rotor and a rotor housing effectively by a method wherein a circumferential seal mechanism is constituted of a seal block assembly having seal elements made of ceramics and seal plates contacted slidingly with the sliding surfaces of the seal elements. CONSTITUTION:Seal blocks 5 are attached to a rotor housing 3 at the outer periphery of the upper end surface of a rotor 2 while seal plates 10 are attached to the outer shell of the rotor 2 or a rotor shell 2a so that the seal elements are contacted slidingly with the seal plates 10. The seal blocks 5 are attached to the rotor shell 2a at the outer periphery of the lower end surface of the rotor 2. The seal plates 10 are attached to the rotor housing 3, and are arranged so that both of them are contacted slidingly. The constituting member of the seal block 5 is the seal elements 6 made of ceramics.
