PURPOSE:To obtain the subject new compound useful as a herbicide. CONSTITUTION:2,3-Dihydroxy-5-trifluoromethanesulfonyloxy-7-chloro-2- hydroxy-3,3-dimethylbenzofuran expressed by formula I. The compound expressed by formula I is obtained by reacting an enamine derivative, prepared from isobutyl aldehyde and morpholine and expressed by formula II with a benzoquinone expressed by formula III, providing a compound expressed by formula IV, then reacting the resultant compound with a trifluoromethanesulfonyl halide, etc., in the presence of a base such as triethylamine, affording a compound expressed by formula V, hydrolyzing the compound expressed by formula V in water solvent, providing 2,3-dihydro-5- trifluoromethanesulfonyloxy-2-hydroxy-3,3-dimethylbenzofuran expressed by formula VI, dissolving the prepared compound expressed by formula VI in an inert solvent such as benzene and reacting the aforementioned compound expressed by formula VI with a chlorinating reagent such as N- chlorosuccinimide or chlorine.
