Summary:PURPOSE:To obtain the titled sintered mullite having crystal particle diameter larger than a specific level, containing mullite phase as a main crystal phase and having excellent creep resistance at high temperature, thermal stability, etc., by forming a powdery raw material containing Al2O3, SiO2 and TiO2 at specific weight ratios and calcining the formed product. CONSTITUTION:A powdery raw material having an Al2O3/SiO2 weight ratio of 73/27-78/22 and containing 0.02-5pts.wt. of TiO2 based on 100pts.wt. of the sum of Al2O3 and SiO2 is prepared beforehand. The powdery raw material is formed and calcined to obtain a heat-resistant sintered mullite having a crystal particle diameter of >=2mum and containing mullite phase as main crystal phase. Since the obtained sintered mullite has excellent creep resistance and stability at high temperature, high-temperature strength, etc., it can be suitably used as a roller and jig for high-temperature use, a furnace core tube, a protection tube, etc.
