Summary:PURPOSE:To suppress aggregation of a lubricant layer and to obtain a magnetic recording medium having high durability. CONSTITUTION:The magnetic recording medium consists of a nonmagnetic substrate, thin film magnetic layer, protective layer, and lubricating layer, successively formed on the substrate. This lubricating layer contains magnesium salt of straight chain fatty acid having an even number of carbon and magnesium salt of straight chain fatty acid having an odd number of carbon. The production method of this magnetic recording medium includes a film forming process of a coating layer comprising a mixture of magnesium salts above described on the nonmagnetic substrate. In the process, a soln. of magnesium salts is made to adhere to a supporting body and then applied with using shearing force of the supporting body on the nonmagnetic substrate on which a thin film magnetic layer and a protective layer are already formed.
