PURPOSE:To prevent a temperature from rising when an abnormality occurs and to keep the temperature equal to or below the ignition point and a smoking point of a recording paper by detecting that a fixing device is abnormal and forcibly turning off a fixing heater when the resistance change value of a fixing thermistor is out of a change characteristic within the range of a normal operation previously set. CONSTITUTION:A temperature controlling part 8 respectively detects the initial resis tance value of the fixing thermistor 5 at the time of starting warm up, etc., and the succeeding resistance change value. And every initial resistance value of the fixing thermistor 5 at a time when a fixing heater 2 is turned on considering the dispersion of an evironmental condition like the wattage, the input voltage, and the ambient temperature, etc, of the fixing heater 2, when the resistance change value of the fixing thermistor 5 is out of the change characteristic within the range of the normal opera tion previously set by the temperature controlling part 8, it is detected as the abnormal ity of the fixing device, and the fixing heater 2 is forcibly turned off by a sequence control part 7. Thus, the temperature is prevented from rising when the abnormality occurs and the temperature is equal or below the ignition point and the smoking point of the recording paper.
