Summary:PURPOSE:To improve the processing speed by employing hardware processing entirely for a series of coding processing from a picture data by a linear coding system into a coding data with respect to the picture processing unit. CONSTITUTION:A coding means 7 detects a change point of a binarized picture data with a change point detection means 12 and a run length counter 13 counts a run length between change points. A coding circuit 14 retrieves a conversion table by a linear coding system based on the content of a run length data and a picture data counted by the run length counter 13 and converts the result into a coding data and outputs it to a memory 18. When a coding data by a prescribed bit is stored in the memory 18, a control circuit 20 outputs a DMA request signal to transfer the coding data to a coding data storage memory of the picture processing unit in terms of DMA. Moreover, a bit number of the coding data subject to DMA transfer is counted by a counter 19 and when the bit number is in excess of a prescribed bit number, a signal representing it is outputted.
