Summary:PURPOSE:To produce the high-purity Y by using a graphite crucible for a vessel as an anode and forming the graphite crucible at a height at which the contamination by the evaporation of a fused salt is obviated. CONSTITUTION:The graphite crucible 4 is inserted into a crucible 3 consisting of Ni, etc., and powdery LiCl and KCl are charged therein. This crucible is put into an electrolytic cell vessel 2. A vessel cap consisting of graphite bored with a hole for insertion of an electrode rod 8 for cathode is mounted to this vessel and the vessel is set in an electric oven 1. The graphite crucible 4 is otherwise formed at the sufficient height at which the contamination by the evaporation of the fused salt is obviated. While the inside of the oven is evacuated, the LiCl and KCl are heated and gaseous Ar is introduced therein. A crude Y metal 11 is inserted into the bath and YCl3 is introduced simultaneously with gaseous Ar into the bath. The bath temp. is kept at about 700 deg.C and an electrolysis is effected by putting the cathode electrode rod 8 into the bath. The electrodeposited Y is pulled up and taken out onto the cathode 8 and is desorbed. The desorbed Y is put into a graphite container partly bored with a hole and is subjected to vacuum distillation.
