Summary:PURPOSE:To obtain a dye donating material not lowering the quality of a transfer image by adding a specific infrared absorbing dye to the dye donating material. CONSTITUTION:A thermal transfer dye donating material is formed by providing a layer containing a thermal transfer dye to one surface of a support and adding an infrared absorbing dye represented by formula (I), (II) or (III) to the dye- containing layer and/or the layer adjacent thereto. When the infrared absorbing dye is used in the concn. of 0.04-0.5g/m , a good result is obtained. The infrared absorbing dye represented by the formula (I) is synthesized by the water- releasing condensation of 1-dicyanomethylnaphthalene or its derivative and 4-nitroso-N,N-disubstituted aniline. The infrared absorbing dye represented by the formula (II) is synthesized by the water-releasing condensation of 1- hydroxy-2-naphthoenic anilide and p-nitroso-N,N-disubstituted aniline. The infrared absorbing dye represented by the formula (III) is synthesized by the water- releasing condensation of 1,3-dimethylene indan derivative obtained by the reaction of 1,3-indan dione and an active methylene compound and 4-nitroso-N, N-disubstituted aniline.
