PURPOSE:To obtain a picture with high picture quality by transferring a signal charge of a picture element read later onto a transfer section in one direction in several number of stages during a read standby time so as to reduce deterioration in picture quality due to undesired charge such as uneven dark current or white flaw caused in the transfer section. CONSTITUTION:A signal charge of photodiodes 1 of an even number line is read immediately by a vertical shift register VCCD 2 after a charge of all odd number lines is outputted from a horizontal shift register 3. While a wait time from the end of read of the charge on the even number lines to the VCCD 2 till the end of movement of a magnetic head, the signal charge is transferred in n-stages on the VCCD 2. Thus, the n-stages of transfer is implemented after the end of read of the signal charge of even number lines to the VCCD while the end of write of odd number lines onto a magnetic sheet till the end of movement of the magnetic head in this way, then a level of an undesired charge such as uneven dark current or white flaw is reduced to improve the picture quality and the yield in the manufacture of the solid-state image pickup element is improved.
