Summary:PURPOSE:To miniaturize a digital still camera and to facilitate connection with an external device by providing a means which records video signals obtained by means of an image pickup section in a memory section in the same format as that of a memory card after converting the signals into digital signals and compressing the data by means of a data compressing section and, at the same time, makes the data recorded in the memory section able to be read out from the outside. CONSTITUTION:Video signals obtained by means of an image pickup section 1 are recorded in a memory section 4 through an I/F circuit 7 after the signals are digitized by means of an A/D converter 2 and compressed by means of a data compressing section 3. Therefore, this digital still video camera can be reduced in size even when the memory section 4 having the same recording capacity as a memory card has is incorporated in the camera main body 10. In addition, the camera main body 10 can be easily miniaturized, since no restriction is placed to the external shape of the main body 10, and the main body 10 can be easily connected with an external device 15.
