Summary:PURPOSE:To refine a SiC powder so that the powder is free from flocculation in water and highly dispersible by dispersing a SiC powder from which impurities such as metal compd. and silica are removed by acid treatment in a water- base medium and then boiling. CONSTITUTION:A SiC powder (e.g. alpha-SiC powder produced by Acheson's process or beta-SiC powder obtained by the reaction of a mixture of carbon and silica at <=2000 deg.C, etc.) from which impurities such as metal compd. and silica are removed by acid treatment is dispersed in a water-base medium (only water, water with dissolution of NaOH, etc.) and boiled at >=60 deg.C. By boiling the acid-treated SiC powder, the obtd. powder shows good dispersibility in water or aq. soln, which can not be obtd. by usual water washing. Moreover, when a basic compd. is added during the boiling treatment to control the liquid to >=pH8, SiC powder with higher dispersibility in water or aq. soln. can further be efficiently obtd.
