PURPOSE:To obtain a low-cost carbonaceous solid-water slurry having excellent flowability and stability, by using as main components a powdery carbonaceous solid, a dispersant for coal-water slurries composed of a particular water-soluble copolymer, a stabilizer and water. CONSTITUTION:The slurry compsn. comprises a powdery carbonaceous solid (a), such as coal, oil coke or petroleum pitch, a dispersant (b) for coal-water slurries composed of a water soluble copolymer prepared from a vinyl monomer (I) of formula I, an unsatd. carboxylic acid monomer (II) of formula II, a sulfoalkyl (meth) acrylate monomer (III) of formula III and a monomer (IV) other than the above which is copolymerizable with the above, a stabilizer (c), such as clay minerals, and water (d). In the formulae, A -A are each H, methyl, etc.; R is CO- etc. ; R is a C2-4 alkylene; R is a C1-30 alkyl, R -R are each H, methyl, etc.; n is 1-100; and X, M, and Y are each H, methyl, etc.
