Summary:PURPOSE:To obtain an image having an aspect ratio of 16:9 whose vertical resolution deterioration is minimized by providing a means converting an output of a means processing a high definition television MUSE signal into a standard television NTSC signal. CONSTITUTION:When a normal NTSC signal is inputted, an IDTV processor 108 is used to apply double speed conversion processing and an aspect ratio conversion circuit 109 is used to display a pattern of 16:9. Since the NTSC signal has an aspect ratio of 4:3, when the signal is displayed on a 16:9 display device, both edges are masked by blanking to display a pattern of 4:3 in the middle. On the other hand, when a MUSE signal comes from a satellite broadcast input terminal 102, a simple MUSE signal decoder 107 is in operation to obtain a luminance color difference signal for MUSE and displayed on a display device whose aspect ratio is 16:9 through a switch circuit 110. Moreover, a standard television signal conversion circuit 114 converts the MUSE signal specification into the NTSC signal specification. Thus, the MUSE video image and the NTSC video image whose aspect ratio is 16:9 with less vertical resolution deterioration are observed.
