Summary:PURPOSE:To obtain the substrate with the thin film of a liquid crystalline high polymer which is parallel with the substrate, is free from domain divisions and is oriented in a uniform direction within the plane parallel with the substrate by forming an oriented film of polymide which is applied on the substrate, has <=15% breaking extension and is subjected to a rubbing treatment. CONSTITUTION:This substrate consists of the substrate 1, the oriented film 2 formed thereon and the thin film 3 of the thermotropic liquid crystalline high polymer formed on this oriented film as its essential constituting elements. The oriented film 2 is formed of the polyimide having <=15% breaking extension obtd. by subjecting the polyamic acid film applied on the substrate 1 to the ring closing on the substrate and is further subjected to the rubbing treatment in order to impart unidirectional orientation regulation on the liquid crystalline high polymer. The deterioration in orientation is entirely obviated in this way even if the liquid crystalline high polymer is formed by a soln. applying method. The extremely uniform orientation of the liquid crystalline high polymer is thus obtd.
