Summary:PURPOSE:To obtain a black and white display of high quality and to reduce the electric power consumption of a back light by forming the compensating plate of films consisting of liquid crystalline high polymers which are formed on oriented films, are twisted nematic-oriented in a liquid crystal state and attain a glassy state at temp. below the liquid crystal transition point and specifying the ray transmittance of the compensating plate. CONSTITUTION:The compensating plate 3 has at least 80% ray transmittance and basically consists of the three-layered structures of a light transparent substrate 4, the oriented films formed on the light transparent substrate 4 and the liquid crystalline high polymers formed on the oriented films. The liquid crystalline high polymers are twisted nematic-oriented in the liquid crystal state and attain the glassy state at the temp. below the liquid crystal transition point. The complete black and white displaying is possible particularly with one sheet of the color compensating plate 3 for an STN liquid crystal display in this way; in addition, the weight and thickness of the liquid crystal display are reduced and further, the electric power consumption of the back light is reduced as the transparency is extremely high.
