Summary:PURPOSE:To obtain a patterned colored ferritic stainless steel sheet rich in decorativeness by anodizing a ferritic stainless steel sheet with the central line mean roughness on the surface and X-ray integrated intensity ratio in the preferred orientation specified. CONSTITUTION:The center line mean roughness on the surface of a ferritic stainless steel base material is adjusted to <=1.5mum. The X-ray integrated intensity ratio in the preferred orientation, viz. (111), (110), (100) or (211) faces, is controlled to >1.7. The properties are controlled by selecting the conditions in the solidification, ingot-making, rolling, cooling, etc. The steel sheet is anodized to develop an optical interference color pattern on the sheet surface. The anodization is preferably carried out in a mixed soln. contg. >=2mol/l of hexavalent chromium and >=2.5mol/l of sulfuric acid. A patterned colored ferritic stainless steel sheet having a lauan-like wooden-grain finish is obtained in this way.
