Summary:PURPOSE:To efficiently remove monomers and solvents from the subject polymer solution by allowing the polystyrene solution perpendicularly flow down to an evaporator equipped with a plate fin type heat exchanger having a specified ratio of the surface area to the volume under a specified condition, horizontally passing a heating medium and carrying out heat exchange. CONSTITUTION:When introducing a polystyrene solution into an evaporator equipped with a plate fin type heat exchanger 12 and removing volatile components therefrom, the polymer solution for introduction into the heat exchanger 12 is allowed to flow down perpendicularly and a heating medium is horizontally passed using a pipe 25. The polymer solution is introduced thereby into the heat exchanger 12 having a passage composed of (1-20mm)X(1-20mm) rectangular-shape cross-section for the polymer solution perpendicularly floving down, plural channels of 50-500mm height and 400-2000m<-1> ratio of surface area to volume under a condition of 20-250sec residence time and at 200-280 deg.C, and subsequently discharged to the evaporator 11 of <=600Torr. After removal of >=80wt.% volatile components, the polymer solution is introduced therein at a condition of 230-290 deg.C, <=50Torr and 20-250sec residence time to remove >=96wt.% volatile components.
