Summary:PURPOSE:To obtain in one step in high efficiency the title compound useful as an intermediate for perfumes, medicines, pesticides, etc., by reaction of a cycloalkene in a carboxylic acid solution using a catalyst consisting of a combination of a platinum compound and nitrogen-contg. oxide. CONSTITUTION:Using a catalyst made up of a platinum compound and nitrogen- contg. oxide (e.g. a combination of H2PtCl4.6H2O and LiNO3), a cycloalkene such as cyclohexene is reacted in a carboxylic acid (e.g. acetic acid) solution to obtain the objective cycloalkane-1,2-diol ester (e.g. cyclohexane-1,2-diol monoacetate). The present process is a one-step reaction, being highly efficient and also of high selectivity. Furthermore, hydrolysis of the present cycloalkane-1,2-diol ester can selectively produce a hard-to-industrially produce 2-hydroxycycloalkene.
