Summary:PURPOSE:To obtain high wearing resistance even for a low floating space of a head and to improve durability of the magnetic recording medium by growing grains essentially comprising diamond fine crystal on the surface of the magnetic medium and covering the surface of the grains with very thin hard amorphous carbon film. CONSTITUTION:The protective film consists of fine crystals essentially compris ing diamond growing on the surface of the magnetic film and a film 5 essen tially comprising hard amorphous carbon formed to cover the whole magnetic layer. Thereby, stress deformation of the top end of projections coming into contact with a head is reduced and the protective film hardly wears. The head amorphous carbon film works as a solid lubricating film to further improve the sliding resistance of the medium. Thereby, high wearing resistance can be obtained even for a low floating spacing of a head and durability of the magnetic recording medium is improved.
