PURPOSE:To control the catenary within a narrow shape range and to produce coated band steels of various sizes by providing a tension command unit for changing the tension of a band steel so that the catenary is controlled within a specified shape range based on the indication of a shape detecting sensor. CONSTITUTION:The shape detecting sensor 13-1 is not actuated when the catenary is below 4-3. When the catenary reaches 4-3, the fact is detected by the sensor. The shape detecting sensor 13-2 is not actuated when the catenary is above 4-4. When the catenary reaches 4-4, the fact is detected by the sensor. Accordingly, whether the catenary is between 4-3 and 4-4 or not is detected by using the sensors 13-1 and 13-2. The fact that the catenary reaches 4-3 is indicated to a tension command unit 14 by the sensor 13-1, and a command is given to a tension control unit 7 by the unit 4 to reduce the tension of the band steel.
