Summary:PURPOSE:To measure the external diameter of the round tube, round rod, etc., irrelevantly to the center position of its section by assuming the outer periphery of the round tube, round rod, etc., is circular or elliptic, and finding the coordinates of points on the outer periphery by a range finder. CONSTITUTION:The range finder 8 measures distances to respective measurement points a - l and sends them to a measured value coordinate computing element 11. A steel tube 1 is measured while sent by the rotation of a feed roller 10, so five computing elements 11 are provided so as to facilitate arithmetic based upon the measurement point coordinates at the same time, but the steel tube 2 can be measured in a stationary state and the coordinates of the measurement points can be calculated by one element in order in this case. Then the computing element 11 performs arithmetic to find those measurement points, which are sent to an external diameter computing element 12. The computing element 12 substitutes those coordinates in a general expression showing an ellipse, and a simultaneous equation consists of 5 equations being obtained is solved to determine the target ellipse.
